Course Description

Mixed Chorus will expose students to many different styles of music and provide the opportunity to sing and perform several public concerts each year.
Students will study singing technique through the use of proper posture and breathing techniques, reading musical notation and applying the elements of sight-reading, singing with solfege, and count-singing to exercises and performance pieces. This course is performance-based and therefore attendance at all concerts is mandatory.

Assessment

Assessment of student achievement in Mixed Chorus will be based on the following criteria:

· Participation/Effort
Students are expected to participate to the fullest of their ability at each chorus rehearsal and to show that they are putting forth their best effort. Points can be lost each day for tardiness, lack of participation, talking and other disruptive behavior. Students will be able to earn 3 points for each rehearsal.

· Concerts
Since Mixed Chorus is a performance-based course, a public concert will be presented each semester. Attendance at these concerts is mandatory. If you are absent from school on the day of a concert, you may not perform but will be excused upon Mr. Wieseman’s receipt of your admission slip. If you know you will miss a concert, you must present a written note from a parent or guardian at least two weeks prior to the concert.

· Singing Assessments
Students will sing individually in front of the director so that the director has knowledge of how each individual sings and so that each individual can be assigned to the proper voice part. Singing assessments will be done at the beginning of the 1st and 3rd Quarters.

· Assignments
There will be occasional written assignments given to assess student knowledge of the music learned as well as basic music theory and terminology learned throughout the year.
